New PTI QuantaMaster 8000 Series Fluorometers
Overview
New PTI QuantaMaster™ 8000 Series Fluorometers
Two years after the acquisition of Photon Technology International (PTI), HORIBA is proud to introduce the new PTI QuantaMaster™ 8000 series of fluorometers. The new PTI QuantaMaster 8000 series modular research fluorometers from HORIBA Scientific offer the world’s highest guaranteed sensitivity specification, plus many unique benefits. Only the HORIBA Fluorolog 3, also from HORIBA Scientific, matches the sensitivity of the new QuantaMaster 8000 series.
- Highest guaranteed sensitivity specification at 30,000:1 Water Raman RMS
- World class software for all steady state and lifetimes needs
- Extended wavelength range with triple grating monochromators
- Ultimate flexibility with up to four light sources and six detectors that can be selected
- Fully automated system
- Best in class stray light rejection with large single or double additive, coma corrected, monochromators
- World class TCSPC lifetime enhancements
- NIR steady state and phosphorescence lifetime detection to 5,500 nm
Ultimate Sensitivity
The industry standard for sensitivity is a signal to noise ratio calculated from a water Raman spectrum. Using this standardized test (see our technical note "SN Determination for PTI QuantaMaster Fluorometer,") our signal to noise ratio is the highest sensitivity in the world, matched only by the Fluorolog3, also from HORIBA. The extreme sensitivity of the PTI QuantaMaster fluorometer is even more remarkable because it is achieved with the lowest wattage lamp in the industry. This remarkable achievement is a result of the intelligent engineering of the unique PowerArc™ arc lamp illuminator featuring an ellipsoidal reflector with the highest possible light gathering efficiency of 67%, and focusing the light in a tight spot at the monochromator slit. As a result, the standard 75W Xe delivers light to the sample more efficiently than higher power lamps featured by other instruments. This reduces energy waste and excessive heat generation by an overpowered light source, not to mention cost, while exceeding the sensitivity of all competitors' designs. Another contribution to the high sensitivity of the PTI QuantaMaster comes from the asymmetrical, aberration-corrected monochromator, optimized for the best light throughput and stray light rejection.
Want a higher wattage light source?
No problem. We also offer a 450W xenon illuminator. It is just a little more expensive. Unfortunately however it does not offer any increase in sensitivity, because it is not taking advantage of the ultimate collection efficiency of the PowerArc illuminator. 1.49 mln cts/s, SN=30,000:1
Ultimate Stray Light Rejection
With Single or Optional Double Additive Monochromators
Suppression of stray light is one of the most critical factors when measuring highly scattering, or low quantum yield samples. Every PTI QuantaMaster series spectrofluorometer is custom made with the highest quality optics to insure the lowest amount of scatter. The standard 300 mm focal length asymmetrical Czerny-Turner monochromators are coma-corrected and individually optimized for purpose as either excitation or emission monochromators, ensuring the lowest amount of stray light contamination for the best detection of the true fluorescence signal. These monochromators boast an impressively high stray light rejection of 1x10-5 in a single excitation monochromator configuration. The excitation and emission monochromators in the QuantaMaster can also by upgraded to double additive 300 mm focal length monochromators, improving the stray light rejection to 1x10-10. The QuantaMaster also offers an optional order sorting filter wheel for rejection of second order signals from large spectral scans. This ultimate stray light performance was motivated by an increasing demand for photoluminescence spectrometers in materials science, where strongly scattering samples, such as powders, wafers and films, are routinely used. Very low stray light performance will also benefit researchers working in biological, biomedical and environmental areas where cell suspensions, protein and biomembrane solutions, or soil samples, generate high levels of scattered light.
Resolution
Resolution is of utmost importance to photoluminescence research. High quality resolution can reveal detailed spectral features which are indispensable for applications in materials science and analytical chemistry. Resolution is the key to detecting very narrow lines, which is necessary to study fine interactions in inorganic materials and crystals. The PTI QuantaMaster yields high quality resolution due to innovative optical design, and very minimal optical aberrations.
The PTI QuantaMaster spectrofluorometers use a precision-driven asymmetrical, 300 mm focal length Czerny-Turner monochromator with a triple motorized grating turret and motorized flipping mirrors. More than 30 different gratings are available. Due to the combination of the computer-controlled motor with micro-stepping resolution and available grating selection, it is possible to achieve a minimum 0.022 nm step size. This means that within the UV and VIS spectral regions, you can resolve spectral features well below 0.1 nm.

DAS6 Decay Analysis Software
HORIBA Scientific decay analysis software recovers kinetic information (such as fluorescence lifetime and rotational correlation times) from luminescence decay data by fitting the raw decay data to one of a selection of kinetic models. Features such as shift iteration and reconvolution of instrument response function (IRF, or "lamp" profile) allow accurate recovery of multiple decay components even when the decay data is grossly distorted by the IRF.
DAS6 is designed to streamline the analysis of time-domain luminescence data, while still allowing for fine-tuning of parameters where necessary. Analysis modules include reconvolution analysis of multi-exponential models plus analysis of more specialised fluorescence decay processes as detailed below.
Multi-Exponential
Analysis for up to 5 exponentials.
Batch Exponential
Batch mode supports datasets containing up to 10,000 decays and is ideal for applications where large amounts of lifetime data are generated e.g. lifetime imaging and reaction monitoring. It features full reconvolution with up to five exponentials and shift iteration.
Global Exponential
Perform global analyses of up to 5 exponential components and 100 decay curves.
Distribution
Two methods are available for performing lifetime distribution analysis. The first method employs a “Top Hat” distribution function which allows a single lifetime distribution to be fitted in conjunction with an additional discrete lifetime. The second method is an optional module which will perform a Non-Extensive Decay distribution which allows up to five lifetime distributions to be modelled.
Exponential Series
Exponential series analysis of up to 30 terms. This allows parameterisation of otherwise difficult data.
Foerster Energy Transfer
2D and 3D Foerster type energy transfer with an optional exponential component.
Yokoto-Tanimoto Energy Transfer
Yokoto-Tanimoto energy transfer taking into account diffusion with an optional exponential component.
Micellar quenching
Micellar quenching kinetics can help determine the surfactant aggregation number.
Exciplex
Exciplex analysis follows formation of an excited state species.
Anisotropy analysis
Impulse reconvolution of up to 2 correlation times and 5 fluorescence decay components. Each model parameter, including shift, can be fixed at a pre-determined value or optimised as part of the parameter fitting. The use of reconvolution allows accurate determination of decay times and rotational correlation times even when the observed decay is grossly distorted by the duration of the excitation pulse.

Hardware
The Source
The xenon source that supplies prime UV performance is focused onto the entrance slit of the excitation monochromator with an elliptical mirror. Besides ensuring efficient collection, the reflective surface keeps all wavelengths focused on the slit.
As an option an additional, software-selectable, xenon flash lamp can be fitted to enable phosphorescence studies.
The Slits
The slits themselves are bilaterally, continuously adjustable from the computer in units of bandpass or millimeters. This preserves maximum resolution and instant reproducibility.
The Excitation Monochromator
The excitation monochromator is an aspheric design which ensures that the image of the light diffracted by the grating fits through the slit. The gratings themselves are plane, blazed gratings that avoid the two major disadvantages of the more common concave holographic gratings: poor polarization performance and inadequate imaging during scans that throws away light. The unique wavelength drive scans the grating at speeds as high as 80 nm/s. The grating grooves are blazed to provide maximum light in the UV and visible region.
The Reference Detector
Before the excitation light reaches the sample, a photodiode reference detector monitors the intensity as a function of time and wavelength. The photodiode detector has a wider wavelength response than the older, traditional rhodamine-B quantum counter, and requires no maintenance.
The Sample Chamber
A spacious sample chamber is provided to allow the use of a long list of accessories for special samples, and encourages the user to utilize a variety of sample schemes.
The Emission Monochromator
All the outstanding features of the excitation monochromator are also incorporated into the emission monochromator. Gratings are blazed to provide maximum throughput in the visible region.
The Emission Detector
Emission detector electronics employ photon-counting for the ultimate in low-light-level detection. Photon-counting concentrates on signals that originate from fluorescence emission, ignoring smaller signals originating in the detector tube (PMT). The more common method of analog detection (used by lower performance fluorometers) simply adds noise and signal together, masking weak emissions.
The emission detector housing also contains an integral high-voltage supply which is factory set to provide the signal-to-noise ratio.
Computer Control
The entire control of the FluoroMax originates in your PC with our FluorEssence™ software and is transmitted through a USB link. On start-up, the system automatically calibrates and presents itself for new experiments, or stored routines instantly called from memory.
Accessories
A wide variety of accessories are applications-oriented and most are interchangeable with the FluoroMax system.

Fluorolog Extreme
The first fully integrated supercontinuum white light laser-powered lifetime steady-state fluorometers.
The Fluorolog Extreme seamlessly combines our fluorometers with the high intensity and broad wavelength range of the supercontinuum lasers made by NKT Photonics.
What is a supercontinuum laser, also known as a white light laser? It is a very bright source that, unlike other lasers, simultaneously puts out light at a very wide spectral range from just above 400 nm to over 2 µm. Because of their brightness and broad spectral range, they make excellent sources for steady-state measurements. Furthermore, since the duration of the laser pulses is in the 10s of picoseconds range, these lasers can also be used as lifetime sources.

Deltaflex
Overview
The DeltaFlex TCSPC system is one of our Delta series of next generation TCSPC lifetime instrumentation. The DeltaFlex offers the ultimate in flexibility:
Firstly, this system is designed for the measurement of luminescence lifetimes ranging over 11 orders of magnitude, without the need to change cables or cards. The heart of the system is the DeltaHub timing electronics, which offers nearly lossless counting and allows for the measurement of lifetimes from 25ps to 1 second. Comprised of our high repetition rate sources, high speed detectors and ultra-low deadtime electronics, the DeltaFlex enables fast and efficient acquisition of lifetime data.
Secondly, our new F-Link bus brings simplicity to modularity. Simply add any component to the instrument and the system automatically detects the new addition and makes it accessible from the software.
Finally, with biological probes and applications such as photovoltaics moving further into the NIR, capability for time-resolved measurements in this range is very important. The DeltaFlex can couple with a range of NIR detectors to offer a solution.
The DeltaFlex system uses our interchangeable range of DeltaDiode excitation sources, DeltaHub timing electronics and PPD picosecond detection modules. Add excitation and/or emission monochromators for wavelength selection and complete spectral collection such as TRES. Our TDM-800 monochromator is specifically designed to give low temporal dispersion. Systems are supplied with a sample holder equipped with a digital temperature sensor and magnetic stirrer as standard.
Accessories include a long list of DeltaDiode and SpectraLED sources, monochromators and peltier temperature control, to name a few. The DeltaFlex can be easily upgraded to incorporate motorized devices through the F-Link spectrometer bus.
